Announcement!

There is NO homework/No spelling this week (how happy are you parents-ha ha)! We have so much going on this week with our Holidays Around the World Unit, The Grinch, and all of our festivities, that I felt it might just be too much! You're welcome :)! Please remember to check your child's agenda for information pertaining to this week's schedule!!! Our class party is on Friday after specials at 1:30, and everyone is welcome to attend! I encourage you in fact to do so! Your child would LOVE it, so would I! My last day is technically on Monday, but Friday is the last hoorah and I am so sad to be going! I am looking forward to celebrating however at the class party and saying my goodbyes to all of you parents! Thank you again for all of your support and for all you've done to make this experience great! I have learned so much and have truly enjoyed teaching Mrs. Tipton's class! They're so excited to be having her return and I know they're going to grow so much more in the future! They're all so sweet and smart :)! Thank again-Miss Highlander

Happy Holidays!!!

Hi there! Just a little blog update for you! We have been studying about the different holidays around the world, and the kids have been LOVING it. We have studied Christmas in different countries, including our own, Hanukkah and the history of why Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah, and Kwanza! We have really enjoyed this unit as the kids are continuing to get more and more excited for the winter break! I want to welcome any of you who celebrate a different holiday to contact me if you'd like to come in and share your holiday with the class. We had a parent share with our students about Hanukkah, and they thoroughly enjoyed it! With this unit, we are "travelling" to different countries, and we are learning about how they celebrate holidays differently they we might here in the United States. We have a "passport" and everything that we add a new country to after we've visited! It's been really fun and a super cute project for the kids to get to share with you once completed! Please ask them lots of questions about what it is they're learning!!!

Elf on the Shelf!

Meet our Elf on the Shelf, Bernard! Many of you have probably already heard all about our class friend! We met him at the beginning of the month, and he will be with us until we leave for Winter Break! Bernard watches over our class to make sure we are being "nice" boys and girls. Each night he travels back to the North Pole to report our behavior (good or bad :)...) to Santa. He is LOVED by all of the students, and they enjoy the new spot he takes over each new school day. I know that we all have different beliefs and different ways in which we celebrate the holidays, so even if you don't "believe" in Santa, this little guy is a great way to help keep the kids accountable in the classroom! He somewhat shares the same role as our class frog, Buddy! If the kids think they're being "watched", they tend to behave better :)! If you're interested in purchasing your own Elf on the Shelf, Joseph Beth is selling them for $30.00. There's a DVD this year that can be purchased separately from the Elf (but goes along with it), and a book which is included in the Elf on the Shelf package. Many of the students have an Elf on the Shelf at home (I hear all of the interesting spots they find he/she in), but for those who do not, Joseph Beth is in fact one of the place you could find him/her (there's a girl elf this year now too-ha ha!). Have Fun with it!

Holidays Around the World!

When we get back from Thanksgiving break, we will be starting our Holidays Around the World unit! We are going to be learning about all kinds of holidays that are celebrated by different people in our world! We are going to be studying holidays in other countries and making fun passports to document our "travels". I am so excited for this unit and can't wait to learn with your students while teaching them at the same time! This will be a ton of fun for us all! If you would like to come in and share a holiday that you and your family celebrate, I'd love for you to do so! Email me and we can discuss when a day and time would be for you to come in and share! I believe having that addition to our unit will be very beneficial! Thank you for your time and interest! I love how much you all support our students and their learning!

Pie Tasting!

Our pie tasting went so well! Each child had a slice of apple, pumpkin and chocolate pie! They loved trying one of each!!! The class favorite was (drum roll)...CHOCOLATE! We graphed our class results and we wrote about our personal favorite! I would like to thank all of the parents that donated a pie for this fun activity, and I'd like to thank our class mom, Mrs. Franklin, for all of her help! I really appreciate you ALL!

Place Value!

In math, we are learning about place value. Place value is the value of a number depending on it's place in the whole number! For example, if you have the number 38. You have 3 tens, and 8 ones. 3 groups of ten will give you 30, and the 8 ones will give you 8. 30+8=38. Below is a picture to give you a better idea for what I'm teaching and your child is learning. We are not working in the hundreds place, just the tens and ones place. We are using manipulatives in class like the ones you see below to help us better understand the groupings. The homework you see your child bringing home will have questions related to this on it! I just wanted to prepare you for what place value is exactly! Thank you :).

Reminders and Announcements!!!

*Thanksgiving lunch for your child is tomorrow! If you signed up to participate, please remember to attend!

*I have sent home a letter about our classroom's PIE TASTING. Make sure you get it from your student's folder and that you read it! I'm asking parents to bring in pumpkin, apple and chocolate pie for our taste test! We want to see what kind of pie our class favors most. We will be writing about what our favorite pie is, and graphing our class results! Thank you!

*I have had an issue with my cell phone, which is where I took and kept a lot of the pictures taken from within our classroom! Because I no longer have access to those photos, some pictures I had taken but had not yet had the time to upload never made it on the blog! I hope that you can look past this craziness! Life happened...
The photos that I do have since I have purchased my new phone will be uploaded for your viewing shortly! I hope that you enjoy them! It's always nice to see those shining faces!
Thanks for understading!

BLOG UPDATE...

Thanksgiving is ALMOST here!
I hope that you all have a great Thanksgiving holiday next week! The kids are really excited, and are looking forward to a nice break from school! They're working hard and I think their brains are a little sore haha! I just wanted to let you all know that we are learning about the Thanksgiving holiday in class, and we are reading books that teach us more about Thanksgiving and where it originated from. Please ask your kiddos to talk to you some about this! This will give them an opportunity to share what they know, while also "reminding" them in a way what they've learned! We have talked about the Pilgrims and the Native Americans. We've talked about the first Thanksgiving and what the Pilgrims and Native and Americans did to celebrate Thanksgiving. Students have been able to write about what they do at Thanksgiving, and what their favorite part about Thanksgiving is. We've taken some time to compare Thanksgiving with other holidays your students celebrate. I really have enjoyed this time of the year and I know they have too!

In addition to learning about Thanksgiving, we have also been studying the different seasons and different types of weather! We have talked about summer, winter, spring and fall (autumn) weather! We have talked about what to wear and how to dress appropriately for different weather conditions!

At home, while reading to your kiddos, or after they're done doing their own reading, ask them about the characters within their books. Have them tell you which characters are main characters and how they know that! We are studying characters in small group, so discussing them at home, and again, reminding them about what they're taught in school, will be so helpful!

SPELLING WORDS (11/18-11/22):

-SH and -TH blends! We are practicing reading and writing words that have the -SH and -TH blend. Words that start, end or have these two blends in the middle of them.

Bath
Then
Thin
Shed
Rush

If you are interested in coming to share with our class a job that you might have as a Community Helper, please contact me via email to arrange a time. We will be finishing this unit on Friday, so any day this week that you might be able to stop in would be awesome! This is a very last minute request, however if you're flexible and it's not too inconvenient, I know the kids would greatly benefit from any knowledge you'd be willing to share! Thanks so much!**

Announcement-Pictures will be coming soon to the blog! I have tons to unload so get ready! Love the snapshots of your sweet kiddos!!!

Special Thank You!

To all of the parents that took the time to meet with me for Parent/Teacher Conferences, I really APPRECIATE it! It's always so nice to see how much education truly does matter to people. I was really happy to get to know each and every one of you a little bit better, and I loved sharing with you about your child's interests in the classroom. I also enjoyed discussing the ways that your child is growing! I love to watch all of them learn new things every day, and it is my goal to push them as far as I can academically until Mrs. Tipton returns! They're all so capable and sweet! I know that we all have busy schedules, and that some of you were unable to meet with me during this time, but please do not hesitate to email me if there are any questions or concerns you ever have regarding your child and what is taking place in the classroom! When Mrs. Tipton returns to her class, she will have another round of conferences in the Spring. With that being said, there WILL be another opportunity to conference about your student's progress at school. Again, for those of you that came, I want to say a special thanks! It was my FIRST ever round of conferences, and you made the experience very comfortable and fun!

Happy Halloween!!!
I know your kiddos are bummed that Trick-or-Treating was cancelled for tonight, but they looked so cute today! Thank you all (parents) for your time and energy! I know it was some effort on your part to find costumes to help them "dress the part" for character day! I loved seeing them so happy and excited, and they did great marching in our parade. All of your children really enjoyed their time at school today, and I'm sure they will have a wonderful time tomorrow night going door to door for candy! Have a SAFE and hopefully DRY experience tomorrow evening with your sweet kids! You all help make my job FUN and Easy!!!

October 31, 2013

Please have your child come to school as a story book character on October 31, 2013. Pick a character from a story and create a costume (please don’t purchase a costume, I would like for the kids to use their imaginations). They will also need to bring in the book with their character. They will share the title, the author, and what the story is about with the class! Be creative!!!

This Week's Spelling Words-short e

We are learning SO much and I just can't wait to fill you all in! Please go over some of this content at home with your students in addition to homework. Just talk about it! If you apply what they learn here at school to everyday life, the information will be much more valuable to them! Thank you! You all are so helpful in your child's learning.

Math- We are discussing flat shapes and 3-D shapes. We are talking about all kinds of shapes. Circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, hexagons, pentagos, octagons, parallelograms, trapezoids, etc. Ask your kids what things at home have what shape! Also, ask them to talk to you about shapes. How many corners (vertices) does this shape have? How many sides does it have? Could this 3-D shape roll? Could it slide? Does it stack? These are the types of questions that will start turning those wheels!!!

Social Studies- We are learning a ton in Social Studies right now! We are beginning to talk about geography and geographic features. We are learning about maps right now and how to read them. We are also really studying KEYS or LEGENDS on maps and how these help us to read and better understand the map we are studying. At home, please talk to your child about different maps and the importance of a map. Show them some maps. We talked about how our school has a map, our state has a map, our city has a map, and the world has a map. We even made a map of our classroom! Also at home, you can talk to your child about our state and the others 49 states in our country. We will be examining a map of the United States and learning the other state's names as best as we can. Hearing this at home and learning there too will be most beneficial.

Language Arts- Practice, practice, practice punctuation!!! We are still practicing punctuation and can probably never get enough practice in. At home, have your children write sentences and make sure their punctuation is correct. Do they have a capital letter at the beginning? Are names and important places capitalized? Is there a punctuation mark at the end of the sentence (? . !). Double check all of this please.

We also are talking about how two words can be blended into one in order to form what is called a contraction! We made "Candy Corn Contractions" in class one day and the kids really grasped the concept! Please have them tell you some contractions and give you the two words they have to have to make the contraction (i.e. they+will=they'll, we+have=we've, did+not=didn't, will+not=won't). This concept is challenging but we will get it!!!

Reading- We currently are reading books and talking about main idea and key details. We also are talking about who the characters are in a text, what the setting is, and what the plot is as well. Have your children tell you what these things are in the books they're reading nightly. This is a good use of their "re-telling" skills which is one thing we are really working on in reading as well. I want for your child to be able to read a book, or hear a book, and then be able to retell what their brain soaked in. This helps them greatly when it comes to comprehending literature.

**Important Announcements**

-I sent a list of sight words home with your kiddos today! I have highlighted a column titled with a certain color that I'd like them to work on. You can have them read the word (you point and show, then they read), and also write the word (you say and don't show, they write). This will help them with sight word recognition. This also will hopefully help to improve their spelling!

-I also am sending our class BUDDY home this weekend! We have selected a student to spend the weekend with him and we are sending his journal along too! Look at the story example that I have on the front page! Read this to your child (this won't be the first time they've heard it) and help them neatly write a story of their own! This will help build their writing skills, their "retelling" skills as they have to retell their weekend, and their abilities to better understand personal narratives!

Math: We are learning about shapes and the different types of shapes that exist. We are starting our geometry unit! The kids love it so far and are really enjoying working with the different shapes. We have discussed what it looks like to slide a shape, flip a shape, turn a shape, etc. Ask your kids to talk with you about shapes at home (i.e. Q: What shape is a tire? A: Circle, or What shapes roll?)

Reading: We are reading stories that will help us with our personal narrative writing. We are also reading stories that contribute to what we are learning in math.

Writing: Today we wrote about what we did at the orchard last week. We wrote in sequential order!

Science: We are still talking about things that can melt and how liquid can change states.

Thank you to all of the SPECIAL parents and grandparents that helped chaperone our Boyd's Orchard field trip!!! Thank you also to those family members who just popped in for a sweet visit! Your help and your support means so much and we could not do half of the activities we plan without your help! Thanks!!!

We had an amazing, and exhausting (haha) day at Boyd's Orchard last Wednesday before Fall Break! So glad that we were able to finish our week before the break with a fun field trip for our kiddos! At the orchard, we learned about bees and apples! We got to eat some yummy doughnuts and drink apple cider! We went on a hayride and we picked apples from an apple tree! We also got to pet/feed animals, and we were able to play on the fun playground that had huge slides! What a great experience!!!

It's been a while since I've posted some photos of your students, so, I thought I'd add some to the blog! Hope you like them!!!

Ms. Banks (another First Grade teacher) arranged for the fire department to come out today! We learned all about fire safety and we loved meeting the fire men! They were so nice! All of the students got to go inside of the fire truck and learn about the different functions that the truck serves. We are very grateful for our fire men! Thanks so much for the service!!!

Here are some pictures from within the classroom! Each week we have continued to be SO lucky to have Vadar! He has been the BEST "class dog". The kids love him and love to read to him! He's a great listener :). Also, we love our celebrity readers! Here are some pictures of our past couple "celebrities". You all are so famous to all of our kiddos! How special is it to have mom or dad come read!? It's really special when grandparents get to come read too. Tessa's grandmother was a teacher in Ohio! She came and surprised Tessa and the rest of our class with one of Tessa's favorite books!

Our Week Before Fall Break!

Note: There is no homework this week! There also will not be a spelling test! Our week is very short and with our field trip on Wednesday, there really is not much time to get it all done! Thanks for your understanding! I'm sure it is a nice break for not only your students, but also you! Enjoy!!! :)

Announcements:

*We will be going to the Pumpkin Patch this Wednesday! Thank you all for returning your child's permission slip in a timely fashion! That made things SO very easy on me as this is my very FIRST field trip! I am so excited to be experiencing it with such an awesome class! (For those of you who have signed up to chaperone: I sent home a chaperone sheet with your student today. It has your name along with the group of students you will be in charge of at the Pumpking Patch. Thank you for all you do for our students! It makes everything so much nicer for everyone involved!)
*Parent/Teacher conferences are just around the corner. I have sent home a sign up sheet for you to fill in a day and time which is most convenient for you and your family's schedule. I would like to have this returned no later than Monday, October 14th so that I can have time to solidify the schedule. This will be the first time I have conferenced with parents before and I am still getting to know your students, so please bare with me as I do my very best to communicate all of the important information about your child's learning with you! I am very happy to be given the opportunity to do so, and I look forward to meeting!
*Look for the form about our class "Buddy" that will be going home to spend the weekend with a different student each week. Anything you might want to know about this new, fun activity is in the letter that your child brought home in their "take home" folder last Friday.

**Today we had an exciting morning! We learned about fire safety and had a fire truck with firemen come out to teach our students! The boys and girls got to walk around the truck and learn about the truck's functions, as well as ask questions about fire safety! Ask them about this neat experience!!**

Have a GREAT Fall Break!!!

This week's update!
Here is a list of this week's words, and below is also a summary of what we will be learning before Fall Break! I know everyone is excited for a mini break :)!

Spelling Words (-in and -ip words):
In
Dip
Thin
Pin
Rip
Zip

Reading: We are talking about Main Idea and how to determine the main idea in stories we read! We also are talking about Key Details still and how to differentiate main idea and key details from one another. Key details support our main idea and we have really emphasized that during our learning. While reading at home, have your kids tell you what the main idea is in each book you read. That will benefit them immensely! Also during reading, have students point out some -ip and -in words! We are working with these words this week and our spelling words include ones with these two endings.

In addition to this, we are reading books that are fiction and non-fiction. We are studying the difference between the two types of literature and classifying books into the two categories. Talk about fiction and non-fiction books at home with your kids!

Language Arts: Students are learning to write in sequential order. They are telling me about their morning routine by using words which signify the order in which things happen (after, now, before, then, lastly, etc.) Also, we have wrapped up our unit on opinion writing and will move into narrative writing. We have a special project that we will be doing to help us strenghten our ability to write narratives. You will receive a letter regarding this by the end of the week!

Math: Students are working on counting back to subtract. Please practice their math with them at home by asking them questions like this- What is 3 less than 10? What is the same as 7-3=4 ( for the second example question, give them a couple of addition problems to choose from with one having the same answer as the subtraction problem).

Science: We are still talking about what can melt and about how heat causes change. Keep the conversations going at home as well please. We will be learning about mammals, reptiles and amphibians too! We've already started this! Amphibians have been introduced first! Classify some animals with your kids at home by asking them what kinds of animals belong to which group!

Thank you for going over the material at home with your kids! It is great to refresh their minds and to continue hilighting what has been discussed in the classroom! It definitely strengthens their learning! You are an amazing contribution to their growth! Also, please make sure if you have not sent in your child's permission slip for the Pumpkin Patch that you do so! We are leaving one week from today! :)
